Writing of the week

When designing a toothbrush, Dieter Ram spent weeks thinking about an experiment with a ratio of handle to bristles, the width of the handle, the number of cells... but this huge amount of work is nowhere obvious in a final product.

Ram has modesty as a person, although originally trained as an architect and carpenter, he wanted to make products that would improve people's lives, rather than design spectacular products to promote his own glory and ego.

The products he designed are embedded in modesty, they are not trying to attract your attention for no reason, they are happy to sit in the background and get the job done. Such modesty is due to a lack of anxiety about being ignored.
